Cabarrus County, North Carolina: The Racing Side of Charlotte

Welcome to Cabarrus County, the Racing Side of Charlotte! Known as the heart of NASCAR Country. Not only was the first official race held here 53 years ago, but this is where the greatest concentration of NASCAR teams are headquartered.

Race Tracks:
Cabarrus County is home to the legendary Lowe's Motor Speedway, the 1.5-mile superspeedway most drivers call home. The race track hosts the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, the Coca-Cola 600, and the Bank of America 500, as well as Busch and Craftsman Truck Series. NASCAR events highlight the schedule in May and October, when over half-a-million fans come to watch their favorite drivers compete. Fans are welcome to come tour the race track when events aren't taking place.

Go behind the scenes to the Nextel Cup Garage, travel down pit road and into the Victory Circle where NASCAR's greatest drivers have stood. A ride around the 1.5-mile oval track in a comfortable van lets visitors feel the action of its 24-degree banks. Daily tours are available (except during events) and a gift shop is loaded with souvenirs and racing memorabilia. For hands-on excitement, step behind the wheel of a NEXTEL Cup-style stockcar at speeds over 160 miles-an-hour with Richard Petty Driving Experience.

The Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway, one of the nation's most modern and fan-friendly race tracks, hosts a smorgasbord of motorsports entertainment from April to November. More racing can be found at Concord Motorsports Park, famous for the world's fastest paved ½-mile tri-oval track, which features NASCAR Weekly Racing Series, Legends and Bandolero divisions. Take the family for some full-throttle fun at NASCAR SpeedPark, which offers five challenging racetracks and games geared for all ages and skill levels.

Race Shops:
Start your engines and get ready to take a behind the scenes tour of one of America's fastest growing sports as you visit the shops of the top NASCAR racing teams. Names like Hendrick Motorsports, Ganassi Racing, Roush Racing, Dale Earnhardt Inc., and more all choose to call Cabarrus County home. In fact, the Cabarrus area is where the greatest concentration of NASCAR teams live and work. Approximately 90% of the teams have their headquarters within a 100-mile radius, making Cabarrus County the ultimate destination for hardcore racing fans.

In these spotless race shops, visitors get an up-close look at how racecars are built and how pit crews train. If you're lucky, you may even catch a glimpse of your favorite driver and get a hand-shake and autograph. Most shops have special fan-friendly viewing areas, team gift shops and even impressive motorsports museums, where you can see championship race cars, trophies and photos on display. Guided tours and maps for self-guided tours are available.
